Artist Statement:
The Safe Passage Cod created by Amy Goldfarb of Marblehead Sea Glass is painted in gold (seen on the sides and back of the piece) representing the classic and beloved golden cod fish proudly displayed on homes throughout town. On the front of the cod, your eye is greeted with a colorful display of locally-collected, hand-selected sea glass. The center panel of the display features the Marblehead Light Tower, created with sea glass, sea pottery, rock, tacks and thread. The Light Tower has provided safe passage to many sailors through Marblehead's history and remains a popular symbol of our strong community.
Artist Biography:
Throughout my life, I have dabbled in and explored a variety of art forms. In college, I studied art history in Florence, Italy and experimented with mixed media as part of my studio art coursework. While earning a Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, I discovered a passion for finding art in nature. I used an electron microscope to photograph cells and cellular organelle at a microscopic level and then, developed the images using classic dark room techniques. After attending business school, I launched Bella Ventrella Designs, a quilting company specializing in the design and creation of "nostalgia" quilts made from clients' cherished shirts and other sentimental apparel. In my most recent venture founded in 2018, I began creating coastal art from sea glass, sea pottery, rock and driftwood lovingly collected on the beaches of Marblehead. Each piece of art brings life and movement to carefully assembled pieces of sea glass. These assemblages decorate seaside homes from New Hampshire to Florida.
