Description
Wampum is wearable art created by the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah, at the west end of the island of Martha's Vineyard. Wampum was discovered as early as 1510. Wampum is made from the quahog clam shell and the channeled whelk shell. The result is purple and white beads. Before the European colonists arrived, wampum was used for currency to trade. The unfinished beads were strung together and rolled on a grinding stone with water and sand until they become smooth. Wampum is prized by islanders and visitors alike. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and other items are stunning.
This bracelet is authentic Wampum made by a member of the Aquinnah WampanoagTribe.
