Description

This is an amazing gift package consisting of some great finds you can expect from Pacha Indigenous Art Collection! These items are hand-made with excellent care and quality. See below for more details on what's inside.

Scarf

The scarf is made with recycled and remaining threads left from the making of other textiles such as fabrics for clothing or blankets. It results in a mixture of bright colour combinations that are entirely unique. Much like a bead soup! The daily task of collecting every little piece of material, reclaiming each thread results in a very soft textile with the use of a technique called "cardado".

"Cardado" is unique to the highlands, as it comes from a specific textile making technique using "cardas", which is a spiky flower that grows in the mountains and is used as a brush. To create the incredibly soft texture, many cardas are aligned together, held by two wooden pieces, creating a wide instrument to brush textiles. This process is manually done by hanging the textiles on a horizontal rope and brushing with two planks of cardas aligned using both hands.

Made by Kichwa people from Peguche, Ecuador, who are the master weavers of the region. Up on the highlands of the Andes, the members of this community are completely dedicated to the manufacturing of textiles and the agricultural activities.

"Rumpa" means "circle, as these are infinity scarves that you can wrap around once or twice!

Materials:50% cotton, 50 % mixed fibers

Shell Earrings (Thunderbird)

Designed by Tamara Bell (Haida Nation) these beautiful earrings feature a special artwork of the legendary and significant North American Indigenous creature, the Thunderbird. These earrings have beautiful colours, made with decal on shell and are about 2 cm wide and 2.25 cm long (excluding the hook).

Pacha Indigenous Art Collection is an indigenous family-owned and operated business.

The Pacha Arts family proudly continues this tradition, now incorporating the prophecy of the condor and eagle into their work. This story tells of a time when indigenous peoples from Turtle Island (North America) and Abya Yala (South America) would come together again in unity, exchanging, trading, and working in solidarity with each other across colonial borders.

PACHA Indigenous Art Collection, “Pacha”, meaning earth in the Kichwa language, is not only a store, but a place where people are able to learn of the stories behind our precious items, which have been crafted by indigenous artists, families, and collectives with you in mind. They see building community as the key to creating a real learning experience and exchange. Therefore they have hosted different events ranging from arts and crafts fairs to workshops, author and artist talks, as well as concerts.
