Description

Stroll the picturesque winding streets of historic Greenwich Village. Hear about its evolution from Indian village, Dutch and English plantations, to the arrival of Irish and Italian immigrants and upscale residents. View early tradesmen's houses, multiple dwelling tenements, and Greek revival mansions that tell their stories. By the early 20th century the Village was teeming with speakeasies and jazz clubs, and had a new and growing bohemian community of artists and activists. Besides iconic monuments, we pass by locations made famous by interesting people and events, such as the gay liberation uprising of the 70s. Enjoy a relaxing break in an historic Village coffee shop. Still a neighborhood on a human scale, the Village has small delights around every corner. Share the eclectic energy that is Greenwich Village today with Virginia Stotz, retired professor of art and architecture and longtime Village resident. Best months for tour: September and October 2022, May and June 2023. Exact date to be negotiated.

Optional add-on for additional $25: Finish the tour with Wine and Cheese on a Greenwich Village Rooftop Terrace overlooking Manhattan, hosted by long-time resident, musicologist and MB1800 board member Nancy Hager.

This is a Live Event Item.
