These pair of statues are an amazing reduction of the guarding lions at tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peters in Rome. The lions were made by the most famous neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova, and then were commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire in 1823, for Chatsworth House in England.

These were purchased in an antique shop in Paris in the 1970's. They each have a medallion on the bottom depicting the conjoined busts of Mercury and Minerva, along with the phrase "ARTS AND COMMERCE PROMOTED"
