Description

Three Bottles of Wine from Three Historic Sites in Napa Valley: From Groth (Hillview Estate), Starmont (Brown Ranch) & B Cellars (Dr. Crane Vineyard)

These are three sites of significance within the Napa Valley. From Groth's first vineyard site to the legendary Brown and Dr. Crane vineyards, these wines are sure to please you.

Groth Vineyards and Winery - 2020 Chardonnay, Hillview Vineyard, Napa Valley, 750mL - 1 Bottle

This single-vineyard Napa Valley Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from the Groth family’s Hillview Estate south of Yountville. This limited-production wine highlights the beautiful fruit — with sweet peach, citrus and exotic tropical notes, along with an underlying minerality — that so often exemplifies white wines from the Oak Knoll District.

Name of Winery: Groth Vineyards and Winery

Bottle Size: 750mL

Number of Bottles: One

Varietal: Chardonnay

Appellation: Napa Valley

South of Yountville, tucked alongside the foothills of the Mayacamas in the Oak Knoll District, our Hillview Estate benefits from the cooling breezes of the San Pablo Bay. We purchased the 44-acre site in 1982 in search of an excellent Merlot source to blend with our Cabernets. Napa Valley’s sub-appellations did not yet exist back then, so we had no concern about whether the property fell within Oakville limits; we simply sought out the best Merlot vineyard we could find.

In 1996, our second winemaker, Michael Weis, saw that the site’s micro-climate and diverse soil types were ideal for growing world-class Chardonnay, so we strategically replanted 26 acres to the variety, reserving approximately 12 acres of our finest Merlot vines.

Starmont - 2018 Pinot Noir, Brown Ranch, Carneros, Napa Valley - 1 bottle

WINEMAKING
Hand harvested on September 19th, these grapes were carefully sorted in the field and at the winery. Fermented in an open top tank after a 4-day cold soak, the wine underwent a 6-day native fermentation with 4 days extended maceration. It was racked twice and spent 9 months on primary lees and another 9 months on light lees. This wine was aged in 100% French oak barrels, 40% new. Careful attention is taken to match oak and toast to the vineyard and wine traits—restrained to push the fruit’s character forward and respect the vineyard site. Comprised entirely of Pommard Clone, just 114 cases were produced. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES
The Brown Ranch Pinot Noir is a rich, concentrated Pinot Noir, exuding blackberry, mission fig and black cherry fruits on the nose while being grounded with notes of bramble and white pepper. On the palate the wine enters round and weighty while the sweet, generous tannins provide length to the wine adding gravitas. Characteristic of the Brown Ranch Pinot Noir, these tannins and weight will help this wine age gracefully for the next 7+ years

B Cellars - 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, Napa Valley - 1 Bottle

A truly special wine from a truly special vineyard. Napa pioneer Dr. George Belden Crane originally planted Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in 1858. During the 1920’s the Chinatown of the City of St. Helena was located on the site. Acquired by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1997, the vineyard’s gravelly loam soils were replanted in 1998 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This is one of three Beckstoffer Heritage vineyards that exist within one square mile of each other. It is because of Andy Beckstoffer's experience, vision, and respect for the land that each vineyard imparts its own distinct characteristics to the fruit it produces.
