About the Print

The Trail Boss and the Scout is about a period in American history when great trail herds were driven from Texas to markets in the North or to the railroads in Kansas and Missouri to be shipped to the East.

Hostiles and other perils were a threat along the hundreds of miles of trail but some of the greater worries were about the need for water and grazing for the cattle.

Sometimes the trail boss or a scout would range far ahead to check on these conditions. In this scene the scout has just returned from a long hard ride and is telling the trail boss about the trail ahead.

About John Hill

John Hill is a self-taught artist who enjoys working in several media including pencil, watercolor, acrylics and oils.

He has experienced first hand many of the subjects he paints such as cattle roundups in Arizona’s Verde Valley, and has photographed, researched and studied the lifestyle of the American Cowboy, both past and present. His sensitivity to and understanding of this rapidly disappearing of life is reflected in his paintings of roundups, cattle drives, rodeos and the workday life of the cowboy.

John paints scenes of common place events which occurred in the early history of the American West, some of which still occur today. He captures the passage of time with an affinity for detail, realism, and color depicting varied scenes from the frontier days in the present.

His paintings of stagecoaches, lawmen and cowboys at work serve as historical documents which recall a time of hardship as the western frontier was tamed by people of determination, faith and inner strength. This theme, and the genre of cowboy and western art has become an important focus for art historical study.

Originally from Sulphur Springs, Texas, John is a long- time resident of Arizona, currently living in Glendale.
