Island Packers visits all five of the islands that make up the Channel Islands National Park and National Marine Sanctuary and is the park’s official boat concessionaire.
Santa Cruz Island - Prisoner's Harbor Day Trip
The channel crossing for a Prisoners Harbor day trip is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the vessel route and possible stops at Scorpion Anchorage.
Prisoners Harbor is located midway along the North shore of Santa Cruz Island. The harbor area is the border of the National Park and The Nature Conservancy Properties.
Prisoners Harbor offers hiking trail options from short, level-ground walks to truly strenuous hikes. A guided trek by an Island Packer naturalist is offered on most day trips. These hikes often travel the scenic, 4-mile trail from Prisoners Harbor towards Pelican Bay.
For the wildlife fan, the Prisoners Harbor day trip offers a good chance to see two animals found nowhere else in the world. Both the Island Fox and the Santa Cruz Island Jay make their homes at Prisoners Harbor.
Santa Rosa Island is a northern outer island that is subject to high winds year-round. Getting to the island can be challenging if sea conditions are less than perfect. Passengers should be prepared for the possibility of a bumpy boat ride. Santa Rosa Island day trip crossing can take 2-3 hours, depending on our route and sea conditions.
Following the crossing, visitors are greeted with an island orientation from a Naturalist volunteer. Water Canyon Creek flows year-round. A hike up the creek bed and along animal trails is a good day hike for experienced hikers. A guided hike is usually offered on the Cherry Canyon trail, which is considered a moderate trail.
On your return back to the Ventura Harbor, we will stop at Painted Cave for a look inside. Painted Cave is one of the largest known sea caves on the planet.
