A hand carved relief which served as the original model for a larger edition featured in the current exhibition “Le rendu” at the Ottawa Art Gallery. The artwork grapples with absence and grounds Secter’s installation titled “Polish” which explores normative masculinity and the stifling effects resulting from the dominant and hegemonic social order.

Le relief sculpté à la main a servi de modèle original à une version plus grande se trouvant dans l’exposition Le rendu, actuellement à l’affiche à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa. L’œuvre confronte l’absence et sert de point d’ancrage à l’installation de Secter intitulée « Polish », qui s’intéresse à la masculinité normative et à l’étouffement causé par l’ordre social hégémonique et dominateur.

Joel Secter is a sculpture/installation artist originally from Winnipeg. He holds a Fine Arts Diploma from the Ottawa School of Art and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa. His work explores issues of identity and examines the ideological forces that shape our relationship to power and ourselves.
Joel Secter est un artiste originaire de Winnipeg qui pratique la sculpture et l’installation. Il est titulaire d’un diplôme en beaux-arts de l’École d’art d’Ottawa et d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’Université d’Ottawa. Son travail explore des questions reliées à l’identité et examine les forces idéologiques qui façonnent notre relation au pouvoir et à nous-mêmes.
