Brave New World, 2021, linocut, 19 in x 25 in
This print Brave New World meditates on the commodification of life in a society driven by market forces, technology and efficiency. It also ponders what kind of world future generations might inherit. Brave New World is part of the series titled It’s the Economy which explores our market economy that relies on continual growth. It’s the Economy was exhibited at the Trinity Gallery at the Shenkman Arts Centre in October 2021. Two drawings in the series were purchased by the City of Ottawa for their collection and shown at the City Hall Art Gallery in December 2021 and 2022.
The creation and exhibition of this series were made possible with the support of the City of Ottawa creation and production grant and an Ontario Exhibition grant.

« Brave New World » [le meilleur des mondes] fait partie d’une série intitulée « It’s the Economy » [c’est l’économie], qui s’intéresse à notre système économique dépendant d’une croissance sans fin. En octobre 2021, l’œuvre a été exposée à la Galerie d’art Trinity, au Centre des arts Shenkman. Deux dessins de cette série ont été achetés par la Ville d’Ottawa pour sa collection et ont été exposés dans la Galerie d’art de l’hôtel de ville en décembre 2021 et 2022.

Driven by biology and powerful narratives, humans have transformed and dominated Earth like no other species. Shirley Yik examines the narratives underlying the systems we create. Yik holds a Diploma of Fine Arts from the Ottawa School of Art and graduate degrees in business and information science from Carleton University.
Motivée par des impératifs biologiques et une mythologie implacable, l’humanité est la seule espèce à avoir ainsi transformé et dominé la Terre. Shirley Yik examine les mythes qui sous-tendent les systèmes que nous créons. L’artiste détient un diplôme du programme des beaux-arts de l’École d’art d’Ottawa et un diplôme d’études supérieures en administration et en sciences de l’information de l’Université Carleton.
