String Art Project by NBS Math Teacher: Steve Holmes
Item Number: 115
Time Left: CLOSED
Description
Title: 2x Mod 360
This piece is a circular representation of the two times table. Each of the 360 nails represents one factor and is connected to the product of that factor and two. For example, the first nail connects to the second, the second to the fourth, the third to the sixth and so on. Once the 180th nail is reached, the connection would go to 360, but since it is a circle it starts over at zero, a mathematical concept referred to as modulo arithmetic.
The graceful curve formed is called a cardioid, after the Greek root for 'heart', and can be found in nature, such as in the reflection of light on the surface of coffee in a mug. It is one of the many aspects of mathematics NBS students study during their ninth grade year.
