Description
The 1876 Centennial Exposition Autographed framed reproduction of page
In 1876 a centennial exposition was held in Philadelphia to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Suffragists had requested that they be allowed to speak on the lack of woman's Suffrage but were refused. So, after the Declaration was officially read, five women of the Suffrage movement including Susan B Anthony and Matilda Joslyn Gage took over the platform (unscheduled) to read the Declaration of Sentiments written in 1848 by Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
When they were forcibly removed from the podium, they went outside the building and read it to the assembled crowd. The Suffrage movement was in full swing at this time, and as part of their protest of the lack of political rights for women, they had, at their Philadelphia headquarters, an autograph book for supporters of Woman Suffrage to sign. This page is framed.
The first page contained the signatures of prominent suffragists, including:
Lucretia Mott
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Susan B Anthony
Matilda Joslyn Gage
Lillie Devereaux Blake
Phoebe Couzins
Florence Lozier, Dean of the NY Medical College for Women
