The iron ore boom of the mid-1800s spurred the construction of thousands of wooden ships to carry iron ore and other cargoes through the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, the upredicatble and sometime treacherous weather conditions of Lake Superior caused thousands of these ships to wreck on a scale more extreme than anywhere on the planet.
