Description

Monoprint

18.5" x 14" x 0.5"

John Avakian graduated with honors from the SMFA and has a BFA and MFA in painting from Yale University. In 1989, he began exploring the medium of monoprinting at the SMFA. Avakian's monoprints are in many private collections, as well as in the collections of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, Fogg Art Museum, and the New York and Boston Public Libraries. He has received numerous prizes and awards for the outstanding quality and unique style of his monoprints. This piece represents the survivors of the Armenian Genocide. The artist used fallen leaves that have been torn up and forgotten, and yet still survived.

This monoprint was made from a secondary or "ghost" print. One of a series on the subject matter, these powerful prints were a challenge to produce. They are unusually beautiful despite their horrific subject matter. They also represent a technical achievement in visually creating a forceful graphic truth – truly iconic, striking, and memorable as one of the vilest manifestations of inhumanity perpetrated against human beings.
