Description

"Umeke Pala Pa'a" or "Divine Grace", is a 5" wide by 5 1/2" tall, heavy-bottomed calabash-styled bowl is made from the rare Kou tree. It's heavy bottomed to prevent tipping. Turned by woodworker Ray Nitta who left a natural edge, the vessel style accentuates the rich browns and gentle wood grain designs characteristic of Kou wood. This piece could be used decoratively or as a functional piece.

The heart of the master is felt in every stroke onto the wood.

Ray Nitta is a wood craftsman and artisan residing in Kekaha, Kauai. An erstwhile teacher, he is still active in enrichment programs at various schools on the west side of the island. He has exhibited his work internationally. Ray is a board member of Lawai International Center.

There is a wonderful article about Westside Woodworks by Margaret A. Haapoja in the January 6, 2014 issue of Green Magazine Hawaii.
