Description

Beautiful depiction of St. Damien of Molokai painted by Hawaiian artist JG de Silva.

St. Damien was a Belgian priest who devoted his life to missionary work among the Hawaiian lepers. He was recognized for his ministry, which he led from 1873 until his death, which cared for people with leprosy who lived in government-mandated medical quarantine on the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Molokai. He served at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Grace. He is the patron saint of the Diocese of Honolulu and of Hawaii and one of eleven saints from the United States.
