Description

This is a unique opportunity for 2 friends or fans of artist Gyöngy Laky to sit down with her for conversation over coffee at Caffe Greco in San Francisco's North Beach. If you've only had a chance to see her art or watch one of Gyöngy's presentations, bid on this chance to enjoy coffee (or tea) and casual conversation with her. And if you are already lucky enough to be a friend of hers, help her support NEXT Village through a generous bid!

In addition to enjoying coffee and conversation with Gyöngy, the lucky winner will receive a signed copy of the book about her, "Gyöngy Laky, Screwing with Order, assembled art, actions and art practice." The book provides insight into her studio practice, activism, and teaching philosophy, which champions sustainable art and design, original thinking, and the value of the unexpected.

Renowned American sculptor Gyöngy Laky has been described as a 'wood whisperer.' Her highly individual, puzzle-like assemblages of timber and textiles helped to significantly propel the growth of the contemporary fiber-arts movement. Laky’s art traverses an extraordinary personal story: Born amid the bombings of World War II, she escaped from post-war, Soviet-dominated Hungary; was sponsored by a family in in Ohio, went to grade school in Oklahoma, and went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley. She followed this by founding the Fiberworks Center for Textile Arts in the 1970s, fostering innovations as a professor at the University of California, Davis, and now lives in San Francisco's North Beach. This 328-page book provides insight into her studio practice, activism, and teaching philosophy, which champions sustainable art and design, original thinking, and the value of the unexpected.

This book is:
• The first comprehensive monograph on the work of this exceptional artist
• An important document that explores the foundations of the Fiber Art movement in America
• A must have for your collection!
