Description

This beautiful mortar and pestle was made from the trunk of a centenarian boxwood from a public garden in Jacou, France, which was felled because of boxwood blight.

The mortar is approximately 14 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height. It is finished with food-safe Danish oil (linseed) and is made to last for another 100 years.

Special notes about boxwood:

Buxus sempervirens (boxwood or European box) is a species of flowering plant, native to western and southern Europe.

Boxwood is often used for decorative “French” gardens because it can be shaped into different forms.

Boxwood is extremely slow growing.  The wood is dense and the grains are beautiful.

100-year-old plants are exceptionally rare, and large trunks can sometimes reach 15 cm in diameter.
