SANDRA CISNEROS is an artist and critically-acclaimed author of poetry, short stories, essays, and novels, and is well-known for her powerful and evocative writing that explores the intersection of culture, identity, and the human experience. Born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Ms. Cisneros is often credited with bringing the Chicana experience into mainstream literature and has become a literary icon for her distinctive voice and insightful narratives. Her numerous awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, a MacArthur Fellowship, national and international book awards, including the PEN America Literary Award, and the National Medal of Arts. Beyond her literary accomplishments, Ms. Cisneros is recognized for her commitment to social justice and advocacy. Her writing often addresses issues of gender, race, and economic inequality, making her a prominent voice in discussions about cultural representation and diversity in literature.


To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in October 2023, Disney II Friends had the honor of hosting Ms. Cisneros to meet with our Lawndale community, take photos and sign copies of her numerous books.
