VINTAGE NOTES

2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

To say that 2020 was a challenging year may be the understatement of the century. With lower-than-average winter and spring rain, summer brought several extreme heat events plus wildfires throughout California. Amador County's Plymouth, fortunately, was undamaged by either smoke or heat and produced fruit with its characteristic savory notes.

The 2020 Cabernet vintage is special because it reflects a change in vineyard stewardship.  The Baldinelli family returned all management of the vineyard to family members and crew that were hand-picked (no pun intended) and dedicated to the site. Through their care, the vineyard's ancient vines were saved from replanting with vastly improved yields and richer, deeper flavor while providing dedicated employment to members of the community—a great illustration of the three pillars of sustainability intersecting with environmental, social, and economic success.

2019 Barbera

With plenty of rain to replenish local aquifers, the Foothills started the year with more-than-adequate groundwater. Warm summer temperatures were ideal for maturing fruit, and a long, warm dry fall encouraged development of rich color and flavor.

2021 Cabernet Franc

With lower-than-average winter and spring rain, 2021's summer brought several extreme heat events plus wildfires throughout California. Fortunately, we saw no damage from either smoke or heat, and the grapes retained their clean fruitiness.
