Description

WHY CAN’T JENNY CATCH A FISH?
Jenny wants to surprise her mom by teaching herself how to fish. Join Jenny on her adventure through a mangrove estuary where she meets several different wading birds including a Snowy Egret, White Ibis, Wood Stork, and Great Blue Heron. Each new friend tries to teach Jenny their fishing method, but Jenny’s big spoonbill just won’t work like the other birds’ bills! Young readers will learn all about nature’s wading birds alongside Jenny, as she discovers important lessons about perseverance and being true to herself.
Jenny’s First Catch is truly a unique children’s picture book that not only covers important science concepts of physical adaptation and habitat partitioning, but also models for children the language and thought process of a Growth Mindset. Written in the hybrid style of Susan’s first two books – an engaging fictional story supplemented by fact boxes – Jenny is fast paced and full of information about the common wading birds that children see.  In the back, there is a glossary of terms, profiles of additional wading birds, and a listing of some of the best places to view these birds in nature.  Take your family on a birding adventure and see how many of the birds in the book you can spot!

Susan Levine - Author
Susan now lives in Naples, Florida, where she is enchanted by the wildlife, particularly the birds. She is a Florida Master Naturalist and excited to share all that she has learned with children through her recent new works. Jenny’s First Catch: An Adventure with Nature’s Wading Birds was published in 2020 and follows a young Roseate Spoonbill as she tries to learn how to fish with her unique bill. Now in Gilbert’s Migration Vacation: The Story of an Original Snowbird, children learn about Sanderlings, as well as other shorebirds, and the amazing migrations they make between their breeding and wintering grounds.
In all her books, Susan blends her interest in wildlife with her imaginative storytelling to entertain and teach young children, while being a great resource for teachers and parents.
