Mary Ricker is a retired oncology nurse who discovered the joy of learning about, designing and making seashell artwork including Sailor's Valentines and home decor fine craft items. Sailors Valentines made by Mary have been acquired by the Chatham Historical Society-Atwood Museum.

"Sailor's Valentine" is informed by traditional Sailor's Valentines, a 19th Century maritime craft. The Valentines are mosaics created from seashells of many shapes and colors arranged in complex geometric patterns set in 8-sided boxes. The boxes were given by sailors as tokens of love and friendship to their wives, mothers, sisters, and friends when a sailor returned home after months at sea. This piece contains the same detailed composition and patterns present in vintage Sailors Valentines.

The artwork can be wall mounted or displayed on an easel stand (stand included in sale).
