Constituting America's Best Senior Essay Winner!

"For thirty years as a school teacher, Nancy K. Arnold, shared her love of America and its history with her students. Though now retired, she continues to share this love through the children's books she writes. Her goals continue to be to excite children about American history, and to help insure that they understand the values upon which our country was founded. To that end, she is often found presenting a program in a school or civic organization, dressed as Martha Washington or a pioneer woman.

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has recognized her for her contributions to children's books on American history, and she has also been given their Women in the Arts Award. Her book, Patriotic Pups, won the Arizona Glyph Award, and in 2015 she received a Silver Will Rogers Medallion Award for Pioneer Pups. She was 2010 Arizona Book Awards winner in Children's Fiction and was honored to receive the Arizona Federation of Republican Women Teacher of the Year Award.  Nancy is also included on the Recommended Children's Book lists of the Mamie Eisenhower Library Project and Constituting America...and she was the Senior Essay Award winner from Constituting America!"

Interested program planners and teachers should contact Mrs. Arnold directly at nancykayarnold@gmail.com.

 "Patriotic Pups":

"Patriotic Pups is a lively retelling of the events of the American Revolution. Following the proceedings are endearing puppies that find homes with American patriots, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other great Americans. The pups follow their patriotic owners through the famous events of crossing the Delaware River, writing the Declaration of Independence, and other historical incidents. Nancy Arnold's rhythmic recitation links the appeal of puppies to the importance of history in a way kids will enjoy and remember. These pups are an adorable family bunch and add their own fictional contributions to the founding of the United States."

"Pioneer Pups":

"Nancy Arnold has done it again with her delightful followup to the award-winning children's book Patriotic Pups. Pioneer Pups is the story of the adventures of four lively pets who accompany their human family on the dangerous journey to the Texas frontier. Along the way, Sweetie, Star, Slip, Scout, and their parents Bonny and Davy prove themselves to be essential companions through their courageous acts and loving ways."

"Written in an engaging rhyming verse, Pioneer Pups teaches elementary-aged children about the age of westward expansion in American history and about the

lives of the pioneers who braved the wilderness to help our country grow. The book is a useful tool for teachers of younger children and an entertaining read for older elementary-school children. Pioneer Pups includes 50 charming illustrations by Ellen Berger."

"Pilgrim Pups":

"At last, the third volume in Nancy Arnold's award-winning children's Pups series is here! This time Nancy captivates us with the adventures of two courageous canines taking part in the earliest events of American history. In Pilgrim Pups, Merry and Miles join their master Barth on a voyage to a New World aboard the legendary Mayflower. The journey is long, difficult, and dangerous. Making a life in the wilderness will only be more so. Bears, Indians, and natural disasters are only some of the perils that await them. In the end the courage, strength, and love of two pups will make all the difference in turning a dream of a new life in a New World into reality Once again, Nancy's sparkling and rhythmic rhyming verse effortless enchants young readers, teaching them about a crucial moment in North American history while entertaining them with an exciting story of survival. Ellen Berger's delightful illustrations only enhance the story's appeal for young readers. As with Patriotic Pups and Pioneer Pups before, Pilgrim Pups can be an effective aid for teachers of young children, and is also an enjoyable and educational read for older elementary school children that will improve reading skills and vocabulary."

Thank you, Nancy and Ellen, for a delightful, fun book that retells our nation's fight for freedom. It is best read out loud to hear and feel the rhythm of the wonderful poetry. Children will find their favorite pup as our Revolutionary War is told from their pup-perspective. The charcoal pencil drawings allow the pups' eyes, ears and positions to really express the story. Teachers need fresh ideas to teach the same subject year after year - this is a book that can help do that. Cover to cover, it's a winner!

"As an elementary school librarian, it is always a challenge to find books about history that will attract young children. Ms. Arnold's book captures the reader from the very beginning. The narrative is told through the perception of several brave and adventurous beagle pups. Each enchanting chapter introduces the reader to a different American Revolutionary figure. The book is written with beautiful poetic structure and is a joy to read out loud to children of any age. The reader learns about American History in a fresh yet instantly classic approach. This book is perfect to read during the month of Presidents Day, or anytime you which to teach about America in an entertaining and engaging way! I would also point out that Ms. Berger's simple charcoal illustrations bring history and the pups alive wonderfully. Patriotic Pups is a must have for any home or school library!"

 Patriotic Pups (Perfect Paperback)

Patriotic Pups  - paper book

"Peter the dog-keeper rushes to the house to catch Mr. Washington before breakfast. His favorite dog gave birth at three-thirty in the morning, and Mr. Washington will gladly postpone breakfast to see the pups! Ah, but this is a fine litter indeed! Lady Liberty, their mother, and Rebel, their father, are the two best beagles on the plantation, and as soon as the puppies' eyes are open they are into everything. Mr. Washington studies the pups' personalities and gives each one an appropriate name, as he considers which of his friends will be the best recipients of these prize gifts. At last he decides, and he delivers each pup personally.

Beacon goes to the famed silversmith Paul Revere. Kite goes to the diplomat and inventor Ben Franklin, an older man, but not too old to enjoy the antics of a prize beagle. Quill, who is fairly quiet (for a beagle) goes to Thomas Jefferson, the learned writer whose personal library would later form the nucleus of the Library of Congress. Banner, whose little nose is always into everything, goes to seamstress Betsy Ross.

By the time the American Revolution breaks out, the pups are grown, and each one is ready and eager to help his person accomplish his or her special deeds for the cause of liberty."
