Description

The Center for Painted Wall Preservation (CPWP) is a nationally recognized, 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to the research and preservation of eighteenth and early nineteenth century paint-decorated plaster walls. It is a virtual organization incorporated in the state of Maine with an all-volunteer board of Directors and Advisors.  Through lectures and other public events, an online newsletter, Plaster Bits, and more the CPWP strives to educate the public about this form of art and the artists who decorated plaster walls of the period.  The following are items included in this bundle are representative of the Center’s work:

  • An Individual membership in the Center for Painted Wall Preservation.

  • A ceramic and cork backed trivet, 8” h x 6” w. The scene on the tile is from the Lorenzo Norton House in East Baldwin, ME.  The murals are signed by Jonathan D. Poor and dated 1840.  The murals themselves were removed from the house in 2011, placed in storage, recently conserved as needed and were installed in a new exhibit building at the Rufus Porter Museum of Art & Ingenuity in Bridgton, ME in 2024.  The lighthouse in the scene is similar to ones found in Casco Bay and Portland, Harbor. Grand opening of exhibition building and public unveiling of mural wall installations will be June 20, 2025. Check museum website to confirm as date gets closer.

  • A copy of Folk Art Murals of the Rufus Porter School, New England Landscapes:  1825-1845, by Linda Carter Lefko and Jane E. Radcliffe,  published 2011, by Schiffer, LTD. hardcover, 256 pages. ‎ 9.4 x 1.1 x 12.1 inches and weighs 4 pounds.

  • A framed hand-painted- freehand brushwork reproduction of a wall fragment from the Merriman House-Grafton, MA, the original decoration by an unidentified artist. Fragment was painted by Linda C. Lefko, one of Center’s founders and its first President.  The fragment’s material is styrofoam painted to simulate a part of a paint-decorated plaster wall with simulated cracks that are present in antique walls.  Overall piece measures 12.5” x 12.5” x 2
