Description

A National Historic Landmark where baroque meets Bauhaus, the 1930 Austin House is the former home of A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr., the legendary director of the Wadsworth Atheneum from 1927 to 1944, and Helen Goodwin Austin.

The Wadsworth Atheneum's Richard Koopman Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts, Philippe Halbert, will lead a tour of this surprising, enigmatic residence in Hartford's West End. Follow in the footsteps of the Austins and their guests, from Salvador Dalí and Gertrude Stein to George Balanchine, Alexander Calder, Le Corbusier, Cecil Beaton, Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille, and Aaron Copland.

Special Instructions

Please note that the tour includes steps without handrails on the first floor, and portions of the house on the second floor. There is a stairway, but no elevator service.
