About the Artist

Alexander Caserta, artist, photographer and documentarian, has lived most of his life in the small, historic state of Rhode Island and has been active in his work since the mid 1970s. His paintings and photographs were composed in the USA and abroad.

Alex works with light, expressing a direct eloquent realism and a sensitivity to observe and capture “a sense of place” with subjects. The element of historical character is present in the subjects he selects. Alex's attention is focused on the color, light, shadow, shapes, and lines that enhance the image. As a viewer, he is alone and absorbed into the subject.

Alex Caserta's teaching practice extended over thirty-eight years in painting and drawing. This included twenty-nine years teaching custom black and white printing in a darkroom and four years in a computer lab using a digital format in photography.

Mr. Caserta has graciously consigned five works to this auction.

About this Painting

Ravello is a small town located high above the Tyrrhenian Sea which opens into the Mediterranean Ocean. Being rich with English gardens and mansions that overlook the ocean, Ravello has been a favorite location for many famous people over the years. Many of the hotels have expansive views of the surrounding terrain, an evocative sky, the vast water and the town of Salerno below.

Celebrities and Ravello

Not just a nice place to visit, Ravello has provided inspiration to composers, musicians, and writers from around the world for seven centuries.

In 1222 St. Francis is believed to have passed through Ravello on his way to venerate the remains of St. Andrew in nearby Amalfi.

It was here where Ricard Wagner composed the second act of the opera Parsifal in 1880.

The great artistic works of M.C. Escher, the famous Dutch graphic artist, were heavily influenced by the lizards and the Moorish decorations that he discovered while staying in Ravello.
