"Nancy Arnold has done it again with her delightful followup to the award-winning children's book Patriotic Pups. Pioneer Pups is the story of the adventures of four lively pets who accompany their human family on the dangerous journey to the Texas frontier. Along the way, Sweetie, Star, Slip, Scout, and their parents Bonny and Davy prove themselves to be essential companions through their courageous acts and loving ways."

"Written in an engaging rhyming verse, Pioneer Pups teaches elementary-aged children about the age of westward expansion in American history and about the lives of the pioneers who braved the wilderness to help our country grow. The book is a useful tool for teachers of younger children and an entertaining read for older elementary-school children. Pioneer Pups includes 50 charming illustrations by Ellen Berger."

Editorial Reviews

About the Author:

Nancy K. Arnold's love of children and America are reflected in her books, as they were in her classroom during her 30 years as an elementary school teacher. She was honored to receive the 2011 Arizona Teacher of the Year award from the Arizona Federation of Republican Women and to be named inWho's Who Among America's Teachers for three consecutive years. She has been the recipient of awards from the Arizona State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, recognizing her for her contributions to literacy and children's history books. She also received the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution American Heritage Committee Women in the Arts Recognition Award. Mrs. Arnold's books are included on the recommended reading lists of both the National Federation of Republican Women and Constituting America. She is a member of the Educational Advisory Board for Constituting America. Being invited to sign Patriotic Pups at Mount Vernon and having the book in the gift shop there and at James Madison's Montpelier estate have been personal high points for the author. Although a native of Texas, Nancy and her husband now reside in Arizona.

Nancy Arnold

Constituting America's Best Senior Essay Winner!

For thirty years as a school teacher, Nancy K. Arnold, shared her love of America and its history with her students. Though now retired, she continues to share this love through the children's books she writes. Her goals continue to be to excite children about American history, and to help insure that they understand the values upon which our country was founded. To that end, she is often found presenting a program in a school or civic organization, dressed as Martha Washington or a pioneer woman. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has recognized her for her contributions to children's books on American history, and she has also been given their Women in the Arts Award. Her book, Patriotic Pups, won the Arizona Glyph Award, and in 2015 she received a Silver Will Rogers Medallion Award for Pioneer Pups. In 2011 she was honored to receive the Arizona Federation of Republican Women Teacher of the Year Award. She is thrilled to be the Senior Essay Award winner from Constituting America, and to represent such a wonderful organization. Nancy and her husband enjoy activities with their four grandchildren, as well as sailing on their sailboat off the southern California coast. She is presently in the early stages of writing her third book, and it looks like she will be in need of a Pilgrim costume for future school visits!

Great Kids' Book About the Westward Movement,

This review is from: Pioneer Pups (Paperback)

"Our family loves this brand new book written by the author of "Patriotic Pups." "Pioneer Pups" is a great way to teach your kids about the westward movement during the 1850's. The book doesn't shy away from the dangers and perils of travel during that time, but it introduces that historical period in a fun and exciting way - with special emphasis on the experience of four pups that accompany the family. The story and rhyme are written beautifully, and the cute, simple illustrations are very appealing to children. We highly recommend this book!"

"Kids will love this adventurous tale of wagon train life during the 1850s. Nancy Arnold's book is a fun way to introduce children to the courage and sacrifices of those great pioneers who helped settle the west."
—Janine Turner, actress, founder and co-chair of Constituting America, author of A Little Bit Vulnerable: On Hollywood, God, Sobriety and Politics.

"As an educator, I love the fact that Nancy Arnold's newest book, Pioneer Pups, hits on all academic cylinders by combining history, social studies, and language arts. But as a reader, I love being swept up in the story, and children will love it too. It has adventure, it has puppies, and it rhymes!"
—Mary-margaret Belota, author of Meeting Halfway, Poems of faith, love, and friendship
