My grandparents came to Canada from Japan in the early 1900s with a glimmer of hope for a better life in Canada. Even through dark times in Canada and Japan, they never lost hope. I made the paper and twisted the wire for each disc of this piece. I wanted it to reflect the toil and perseverance needed to prevail in the face of challenges.

Mes grands-parents sont arrivés au Canada au début du 20esiècle, en quête d’une meilleure vie. Malgré des périodes difficiles ici et au Japon, ils n’ont jamais perdu espoir. J’ai fabriqué le papier et tourné le fil de fer pour chaque disque de cette œuvre. Je voulais qu’elle représente le travail et la persévérance nécessaires pour surmonter des défis.

Judy Nakagawa began studying sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art+Design in Washington, DC in 1998. In 2002 she was awarded the Corcoran School’s Berthold Schmutzhart Award for sculpture. She exhibited her work in Washington DC at the Whitewalls Gallery, at the Corcoran; the Jackson Art Centre, in Georgetown; and, had a solo show at the Errant Space Gallery in the National Press Club Building in downtown Washington. She moved to Vancouver in 2004, where she participated in numerous shows, including two major solo shows: “In Pursuit of a Quiet Art” at the Japanese Canadian National Museum in Burnaby, BC; and “A Steveston Beginning: Remembering My Mother” at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site in Richmond, BC. Since moving to Ottawa in 2018 she has been represented by and shown her work at Studio 66. In 2023 she had a solo show at Studio 66, now called DeMontigny Contemporary gallery.
In 2024 she participated in the “Rising Tide: 2023 Additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection” group show by the City of Ottawa, which purchased a major piece.
Other shows in 2024 included “Inviting the Conflict”, a group show at The Ottawa Art Gallery Annex and a group show in support of “Echoes: Vibrations from Japan to Canada”, a dance performance at the Arts Court in Ottawa. Also in 2024 she was commissioned to create a sculpture for the annual CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) Dream Home fundraiser.
Judy Nakagawa a commencé à étudier la sculpture en 1998 à la Corcoran School of Art+Design (Washington, D.C.).
