Wagemaker Wolverine “Elgin”

After World War II the Wagemaker Boat Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan turned its production to recreational boating, apply technology developed during the war. In particular this technology involved the “cold-molding” process in which successive layers of wood, in this case mahogany, were laid down over a mold with newly developed adhesives binding them, creating a lightweight, strong, leakproof hull.

The boat was marketed under the name “Elgin”, by Sears Roebuck.

The Minnow, this particular boat, began its life in the 50’s plying the waters of Western New York where I purchased it in the late 90’s few years after it won “Best in Show” at an Antique and Classic Boat gathering on the Niagara River.

Equipped with the original electric start, 40 hp Mercury motor, the boat starts and runs well, having been in the water in the 2024 season in Vermont. One of the pictures show the boat at the fishing access dock on Lake Dunmore.

This is a perfect boat for somebody who’d like an inexpensive way to show a little bit of style on the water without breaking the bank. It should be dry-sailed and keep under cover when not being used to keep the finish in good shape. The original trailer is functional, though it is slightly rust-pitted.

Whether you are on the water or trailing the boat, it is a real eye-turner.
