Description

This book serves as a comprehensive exploration of the interplay between humans and the Swiss Alps over time by emphasizing the significance of native mountains in shaping Swiss identity and the nation's prosperity as well as highlighting the contributions of key figures in pushing and promoting the Alps to the world. Part I offers a Chronological History, tracing human presence from the Ice Age to the 21st century. It explores early settlements, the influence of Celtic tribes and Roman occupation, the role of the Alps in medieval Switzerland, and the gradual shift in perception towards the mountains during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods. Part II provides a Topical History, delving into themes such as tourism, travel, mountaineering, sports, literature, art, music, identity, politics, religion, research, land use, and life in the Alps. (477pp. full-color illus. index. Masthof Press, 2025.)

With broad encyclopedic scope, Helvetic Heights: A Human History of the Swiss Alps explores the interactions between humans and the Swiss Alps over five millennia of time. It approaches the slopes, the lakes, the flora and fauna from multiple angles: scientific, philosophical, and poetic. In these pages, we see the legends, faith, and daily life of the mountain people of Switzerland, their character and fortitude. The book closely examines their civic and national identities, based on the towering peaks and backed with democratic and neutral politics. With around 200 pictures, charts, maps, and tables, this weighty volume takes on the stance of a tourist, a mountain climber, a 19th-century skier, a cogwheel railroad engineer at 11, 000 feet. It sheds light on the works of Swiss and international authors who used the heights of Helvetia as inspiration for literary effusions--from Virgil to Voltaire, Tolstoy to Twain, Goethe to Garcia Márquez, from Balzac to Byron, Shelley to Schiller, Albrecht Haller from Bern (whoÂÂÂÂ’s that?) to Jean-Jacques Rousseau of Geneva. It shows colorful Alpine reflections in art works, architecture, photography, and movies. It vibrates with high-altitude music. The human sciences of glaciation, geology, hydrology, and climate science take their historic due since many of modern high-altitude earth sciences trace their data and beginnings to this region. A long narrative arc from the Ice Age to the Information Age is clear, detailed, and footnoted. In short, the human mind grasps the splendor of the Swiss Alps... today. For millennia, though, jagged elevated interlopers seemed more like a terror-ridden deathtrap than a touted tourist destination. Now we study them, sing about them, save, pave and politicize them. The trick is not to love them to death.
