Description
Dark blue transparent glass tray with a stenciled glass acanthus design. This is fused glass created by Christine Tuve Burris of Washington, DC.
The tray is Bullseye Deep Royal Blue glass, with an irid
coating covered by thin clear glass. The design was sifted on
top of this with white glass powder, then fired before it was
slumped into shape. It is food safe, can be heated in a warm oven (not hot) and very occasionally put in the dishwasher. Be careful not to shock the dish from high temperature to low. It is intended to provide years of use and enjoyment; hold it to the light and enjoy the deep blue hue.
The acanthus spoon was hand carved in 1995 and signed by
T.K. The acanthus is a very old art form, first used in ancient Greece in 500 BC. Over time it was passed down throughout Europe and
became especially popular in Norway around 1600. It is usually a
high relief with C and S patterns, and is thought of as the
rosemaling of carving. Because of its significant role in Norwegian
folk art it has become a symbol of national Norwegian identity. The acanthus plant is thought to symbolize rebirth and immortality. The tray measures 12" x 12". The spoon measures 11" long x 2" wide.
