Joseph Forepaugh built this stately Irvine Park mansion in 1870, but it wouldn’t become a restaurant until the 1970s.
Since then, Forepaugh’s has hosted many family dinners, countless weddings, more than a few head chefs, and one ghost.
Molly haunts these halls, the ghost of a former chambermaid who fell to her death from one of the upper floors. Bruce Taher, who resurrected the restaurant this summer after its closure since COVID, embraces the legend. In fact, his wife has hosted a séance or two in the space, where lights are known to flicker and elevator doors open for no reason.
If you have chills, warm yourself with some of the fresh pastas on the menu or dig into the steamed mussels, the brick-roasted chicken, or that dazzling beef Wellington. Each room has been restored to Victorian elegance, without the affection for overly ornate wallpaper you may remember from the past. Sit at the bar and order a burger from a separate menu, or enjoy the lofty view from the sky deck on top of the carport.
Just don’t fall.
