Description

In the summer of 1999, Rivka Katvan captured the magic of the 53rd Annual Tony Awards. This was a splashy night at the turn of the century that featured original musicals like Parade, Fosse and Footloose, and notable wins for actors such as Judi Dench, Kristin Chenoweth, Bernadette Peters and Martin Short. But there was a special moment that took place offstage when two living legends -- Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews -- united in the dressing room. In this rare photo by Katvan, the pair, who famously starred together in the 1962 musical variety special Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall, put on the finishing touches to their glamorous looks. Hold on to a piece of theater history that captures an iconic friendship.

Katvan, renowned photographer and one of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ most ardent champions, began taking backstage photographs in 1978. She has documented the celebrated stars of Broadway and the theater’s community of creative artists for more than four decades. Since 1996, Katvan and her husband Moshe Katvan have donated more than 100 extraordinary legendary portraits of Broadway’s best, raising more than $300,000 for Broadway Cares as part of the Grand Auction. Today, Katvan offers a collection of beautifully captured private moments with Broadway’s most celebrated stars and creators.
