Description

Description of artwork: This is a color pencil (Prisma) drawing over a 4B graphic pencil on Bristol low acid / archival paper. This original drawing was created during a life drawing session at the Artist Loft (a local group) in the late 1990s as a twenty-minute pencil sketch, and then developed into this finished allegorical nature scape in 2011. It won an award at the Artist Loft art show at the Freight Room in 2011. It is matted, framed, and features a non-glare glass presentation, which alone has a $300 value.

Artist: Marshall B Hatch III

Artist statement: I attended art school in 1975-1976, following my graduation from Laconia High School. Although this piece is realistic, it was not intended to be anatomically accurate. There are 12 critters in company with the figure of "Evelyn", and she is depicted here as our progenitor of shared evolving life in beauty and grace. I have been an active member of the local Artist Loft since it began at the Belknap Mill in 1980 and continues at Lakes Region Community College in Belmont. I have spent most of my art time working from live models and the natural world. I enjoy spending my spare time exploring the wild outdoors and have been fortunate enough to travel to many far-reaching destinations around the globe. Art has helped me build a balance between my 40-year clinical career at the mental health center and a whole life outside of my work role. Seek what you know to be beautiful and share it however you can. This is catharsis for me.
