Description

We are incredibly honored to present this exceptional, one-of-a-kind Raku-fired vase, handcrafted by the late, beloved local craftsman Mike Joens. This beautiful piece has been generously donated by Hog Creek Farms in memory of Mike, who was a former patient of TCMH Hospice of Care.

This is more than just a stunning piece of pottery; it's a story of artistry and a heartfelt connection to our hospice mission.

The Dramatic Art of Raku: This vase was created using the exciting Raku firing process, a technique based on traditional Japanese pottery. The process is famously unpredictable, ensuring every single piece is unique.

  • First, the glazed project is fired in a kiln until it reaches a searing 1750 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • While still glowing orange and shiny from the molten glaze, it is removed with long metal tongs.

  • It is then immediately placed in a container (like an old wash tub or metal trash can) filled with combustible materials such as shredded paper

  • The intense heat from the pottery instantly ignites the paper. The container is then covered, trapping the smoke and starving the fire of oxygen.

  • This "reduction firing" forces the carbon from the smoke to react with the special, mineral-rich glazes. This chemical reaction is what creates the stunning, iridescent metallic sheens and deep, lustrous colors that Raku is famous for, often resembling the look of "oil on water".

  • After 15 to 20 minutes, the melted glaze chemicals harden into colored glass, and the piece is removed to cool.

This is a unique opportunity to own a piece with a powerful local story.
