Description

This outstanding 12 ½” basket depicts desert lizards and black widow spiders, woven by the famous Master Weaver, Marian Cruz of Ak Chin Village. The middle of each of the black widow spider has a small weft of the rare red Yucca Root, obtained by digging the roots of the Spanish Bayonet, or Banana Yucca. This red material is also used along with Devil’s Claw as lacing around the perimeter of this basket. One of Ms. Cruz’s baskets, with this exact pattern, graced the lobby of Centennial Hall at the University of Arizona for years but is now housed inside the Arizona State Museum. Circa 2000. The description and appraisal of value is provided by Terry DeWald, a member of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association.
