Description

You won't find this online Oldest (and most unique) item in our Auction!  (Also a "Railroad / Coal Advertising Promotion", just arrived from an Estate Sale.)  This is an Antique "Pocketwatch Key" (which was used until the 1870's / 1880's to wind Pocketwatches).  Pocket Watches stopped using these Keys when crown-winding became standard, after Patek Philippe's 1850 invention of the keyless stem/wind system.  Watch Keys stopped being used around 1880.  (And Pocket Watches were mostly replaced by Wristwatches after World War I, by 1919).  So this item is very OLD!  But what makes it even more unique (and authenticates the age) is that it is an Advertising Promotion from the tPoconos Town of "Mauch Chunk".... a Town which NO LONGER EXISTS!  In the 1800's "Mauch Chunk" was a major Tourist Spot (second only to Niagara Falls).  The Town's prosperity was built on Anthracite Coal, transported by Canals and Early Railroads.  Founded in 1818, it declined during the Great Depression.  In 1954, "Mauch Chunk" merged with "East Mauch Chunk" and the Town was RENAMED "Jim Thorpe" (after the Native American Athlete).  "Mauch Chunk" (and the J. Stedman Jewelers, advertised on this Watch Key) no longer exists in the USA.  The new Town of "Jim Thorpe" is famous today for its original Victorian Architecture, museums, and railroads (but you can never again visit "Mauch Chunk") (and you'll never see an item this unique in an Online Auction!)  Please see photos for sizing; key is about the size of a US Quarter.  The Advertising Inscription shows "Fine Watches and Jewelry, JL Stedman, Mauch Chunk". Pocketwatch Key can be shipped nationwide to the Winning Bidder (with insurance) or picked up for FREE in Enfield, CT.  Amazing Antique for any Watch or Jewelry Lover!
