Description

Matted black and white photograph by Gerald Tsuruda, 20 in. x 20 in.

Gerald Tsuruda's stunning black-and-white fine art photography of California agriculture tells the story of the land and its people through photo essays. Over the past fifteen years he has created and shown two acclaimed projects, "Gifts of the Soil" and "The Silent Harvest." Like noted photographer Ansel Adams, Tsuruda uses traditional methods of exposure, development and print (termed the "Zone System"). The use of 4 X 5 inch negatives negatives gives his photographs rich depth and fine resolution.

Tsuruda, a third-generation Japanese American, is now focused on documenting the Sutter Buttes in Northern California, known as the world's smallest mountain range. These seldom-photographed mountains will be captured first in black-and-white and later in color, using a Hasselblad camera (2 1/4 X 2 1/4 inch negatives). The photo for sale here of walnut trees is from this series.

"One of the state's great photographers."

--Dr. Kevin Starr, Librarian for the State of California

"Tsuruda gives voice to the people who help keep tradition alive."

--Alison Hodges Tate, The Davis Enterprise
