Born in London, England, to Scottish parents, Sheila Masson emigrated to the United States in 1989.

After earning a bachelor's degree in illustration and photography back in the UK, Sheila worked as a photo researcher and photo editor in New York City for four years. After moving to California in 2000, Sheila worked as a photo assistant to renowned photographer Lauren Greenfield in Los Angeles, and as a freelance photojournalist in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where she is now based.

In 2002, she was a participant in the Eddie Adams Workshop, and photographed the first anniversary of the 911 bombing in New York City. One of these pictures was subsequently published in the books "Life: The Year in Pictures" and "NYC 9/11/02: Life Going On."

In 2003, Sheila participated in the "America 24-7" project, and was published in both the national and the California books.
