Before being drafted by the New Jersey Devils in third round (82nd overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Gionta enjoyed a celebrated career at Boston College. He qualified for the Hockey East All-Star Team all four years, earned first-team All-America honors in his last three years and was named Hockey East Player of the Year in his senior year. From 1997-2001, Gionta amassed 232 points (123 goals, 109 assists) in 164 games. He joined the Devils in 2001-02, notching 11 points in 33 regular-season games and four points in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.
