Written by Gian Carlo Menotti, this deeply moving opera was inspired by a newspaper story about a Polish man who committed suicide when he failed to gain entry to the United States. This story is about a young family trying to escape from tyranny. For John Sorel, the only hope lies in gaining visas to leave the country. Day after day, his wife fills out papers at the consulate. As the Secret Police dog their steps, the situation becomes desperate. Will their only freedom come from death?
