Paul is one of the best two-way catchers in the National League. A very durable receiver, he has caught more than 1,000 innings each of the past two seasons. Pitchers enjoy throwing to him and he does a good job of controlling the running game. Last year he threw out 41% of opposing base runners trying to steal, sending 57 runners back to the dugout. Paul is also an excellent contact hitter, with the power to drive the ball into the gaps. For the second consecutive season, he had a very strong first half, batting .307 with six home runs and 34 RBIs by the All-Star break. Paul was rewarded with his first All-Star selection in 2003. A 25th-round draft pick by the Dodgers in 1993, Paul was a two-time All-Star in the minors. He made his major-league debut in 1998 and had his breakout season in 2001, when he batted .320 with a .543 slugging percentage.
