Description
Do you want your child to care about making healthful food choices and getting ample physical activity? Then get a group of parents for your child's class to bid on Class Health Day!
The class will come on an all day fieldtrip to Teachers College, Columbia University to the EarthFriends resource center for a day of healthful adventures. The day will begin with learning what happens in the body when we eat foods such as soda, french fries, chips and candy. The students will spoon out the teaspoons of fat and sugar in each of these foods and participate in a demonstration that shows how hard it is for our blood to handle large amounts of fat and sugar. They will discuss and brainstorm ideas for more healthful snacks and each make a personal commitment toward more healthful eating.
For lunch, the students will cook a meal based around fresh vegetables and fruit grown by local farmers and purchased at a farmers' market. After a lunch that fills their body with good food, the students will learn about all the benefits that physical activity has on our bones, muscles, heart, lungs and brain. The class will then go to a dance studio in Teachers College to have a kids' Pilates class. The day will end the day with a relaxation session that will help the students to really believe in themselves and to stay motivated to eat well and get ample physical activity.
Field trip led by: Pam Koch (PS 75 parent). Pilates and relaxation: Yvonne Over
