The Scuba ("self-contained underwater burning apparatus") was designed to fill the needs of those with less wood and water, and those who desire a smaller, more economical, personal-size hot tub. It fits in tubs as small as 4' in diameter and 24" deep, or rectangular tanks at least 28" in width.
Many owners of conventional hot tubs, discouraged by the heating costs (some report over $50 per month), have installed Snorkel® Stove as a new primary heat source. Since both stoves simply bolt into place, no modifications are necessary to the existing pump/filter system. (For indoor use, proper chimney installation is required.)
Installation
The Snorkel and Scuba® Stoves are easy to transport and install. They are bolted to the wall of the tub through special mounting brackets welded to the stove. A protective fence (also useful as a backrest) supplied with the stoves, is then bolted to the other side of the stove to separate the bathing area from the heater.
Operation
After filling the tub to the minimum water level (marked on each stove), a fire is kindled in the bottom of the stove. The sliding door is positioned to allow air to shoot down the "snorkel tube" air intake, and a roaring draft starts immediately up the chimney. Water circulates through the heat exchange tubes and around the submerged stack and stove body.
You'll be amazed to find that, even with a roaring blaze in the stove, you're able to reach underwater and touch the stove's hottest parts momentarily without getting burned. Once the desired temperature is attained, the draft is simply reduced and the water stays hot for hours.
Fuel and Maintenance
The Snorkel and Scuba will burn just about anything, but the most popular fuels are firewood and coal. Even with frequent use, a cord of wood will last several months. The only maintenance required is an occasional ash removal, which is quickly accomplished with our long-handled ash scoop.
Construction
Both our stoves are made of heavy-duty, marine-grade aluminum, then powder-coated with a special protective coating that, with marine-grade aluminum, virtually eliminates corrosion. Aluminum is also a great conductor of heat, three times faster than steel. Each seam is hand-welded by professionals and water-tested before leaving the factory to ensure you years of trouble-free performance.
