Description
A unique item, this 37" x 17.5" brass rubbing is of John Berners (1523) in Early Tudor or Male Skirt Period of Armour. The armour is typical of the time with its shoulder plates, leg "defenses" and square-toed "sabatons". Portrayed with all his cotes of arms. Note: monkey on this shoulder. He is displayed in silver on a red brocade background. This is an original memorial, not permitted to be rubbed at present.
Brass rubbings are copies of an engraved brass portrait, like those often seen as memorials on the walls in churches. Today, many churches have disallowed rubbing for fear of destroying these memorials.
