They are natural silica that has been covered by volcanic ash. The formation of the pictures on the stones is from water and disolved minerals seeping into and filling in the stones along their cracks. The minerals create the colors that are seen in the stones.


The Traditional Chinese Painting Stones of Guangxi Province are also called Grass and Flower Stones.
