Description
Following the 1906 earthquake, they acquire farmland in Napa Valley. The Wagner family builds a winery to produce bulk wines in 1915, which grew to 30,000 gallons of wine per year before Prohibition.
On the Rutherford land purchased by their forefathers, Caymus was founded in 1972 by Charles F. Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner. The Wagner family produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1972 vintage. From the 1975 vintage, Caymus introduces "Special Selection," a Cabernet Sauvignon chosen from the best lots and given extended barrel aging.
This magnum of Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Special Selection, 2002 is "rich yet sleek and concentrated, with tiers of ripe plum, wild berry and black cherry. Shows a touch of spice, sandalwood and nutmeg. The long, detailed aftertaste that keeps introducing new flavors. Best from 2006 through 2014." (score of 93, Wine Spectator)
