Description
Curt Schilling is the celebrated pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. His wife, Shonda, has also made her mark as an athlete, running both the Arizona and Boston marathons this year and riding in the Pan Mass Races. The Schillings are well known for their community involvement. They have devoted much of their personal time to increasing public awareness of Lou Gehrig's disease and fundraising on behalf of the ALS Association, while working on innovative programs that fund patient services and vital research. In addition, Shonda, a lifelong sun worshiper diagnosed with Stage 2 melanoma, was inspired to start SHADE, a Schilling family foundation dedicated to increasing education and awareness about melanoma, which, if undetected, can be fatal within six months. The Schillings have posted a motto on the SHADE Web site: "What we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others lives forever... We just happen to be very passionate about being involved in the community." Sponsors of a family escaping the ravages of hurricane Katrina, the Schillings demonstrate their commitment in real time.
