Yabu was the number one draft pick of the Hanshin Tigers in 1994 and is the fourth native of Japan in the history of the Oakland organization. In the Japanese Central League, he compiled an 84-106 record and a 3.54 ERA in 268 games, 236 of them starts and never had an ERA above 4.17.
