Description
This is an awesome original Clifton Karhu woodblock print, number 5 out of 80. This a rare large print format at 23" x 27" in fantastic condition. The print is hand signed. This is a very large collectable piece with brilliant blues and bold rocks; the print has never been framed.
Clifton Karhu was the first foreign member of the Japan Print Association, and has been the President of the Kyoto chapter. Karhu uses a rich blend of colors and a strong overprinting of black line that is quite distince from earlier Japanese print styles.
Most of his subjects are drawn from locations in and around Kyoto, and in particular he is fond of using architectural elements in his work. These provide linearity and stability to the art, some of which may employ particularly bright and strong colors. Special effects and moods are also created witht eh use of light and shadow filtering across scenes. And though people are typically absent in Karhu's work, there is always a feeling of human presence behind closed doors.
